Frequently Asked Questions about OCIA
Order of Christian Initiation of Adults
Getting Started
What is OCIA?
OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the process through which adults are welcomed into full communion with the Catholic Church. It is open to those who have never been baptized, those baptized in another Christian tradition, or baptized Catholics who have not received all the Sacraments of Initiation (Eucharist and/or Confirmation).
Who is OCIA for?
OCIA is for:
- Adults and children 8 years and over who have never been baptized.
- Adults baptized in another Christian denomination who wish to become Catholic. If it is a child, they would attend our Faith Formation Program; please contact the parish office at (407) 699-5683 or visit the Faith Formation Page.
- Baptized Catholics who were never confirmed or did not receive First Communion.
How do I get started?
Simply reach out! Contact our OCIA Coordinator, Vera Howard, or call the parish office at (407) 699-5683. We’d love to meet you and walk with you on this journey.
When and where does OCIA meet?
OCIA meets every Monday evening from 6:30–8:00pm in Conference Room 113.
What to Expect
What happens during the OCIA process?
OCIA includes:
- Weekly gatherings with Scripture, prayer, and conversation
- Learning about Catholic beliefs, sacraments, and traditions
- Rites celebrated with the parish community
- Spiritual support and mentorship including special guest speakers from various St. Stephen ministries
How long does OCIA take?
The typical journey for non-baptized catechumens begins in the fall and leads to the Easter Vigil, where they receive the three Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and First Holy Communion. The Church walks with you at your pace – there’s no pressure or deadline.
The journey for baptized Christian candidates culminates with the Rite of Full Communion during a weekend Mass throughout the year.
The journey for baptized Catholic candidates culminates in Confirmation, celebrated with the Bishop of the Diocese of Orlando at various designated locations and dates throughout the year.
What if I was already baptized?
If you were baptized in a Christian faith – outside of the Catholic Church – with water and in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the Catholic Church honors that baptism. You will be asked to provide proof of baptism. You will not be re-baptized but will continue your journey toward Confirmation and Eucharist.
Is there a cost to participate in OCIA?
No! OCIA is free. The only “cost” is your time and openness to the process.
I’m nervous… what if I don’t know anything?
That’s totally okay! You don’t have to know anything before you begin. OCIA is a place to explore, ask questions, and grow at your own pace. We’re here to support you, not quiz you. You are welcome here just as you are.
Do I have to commit to becoming Catholic before I start?
No. The first stage of OCIA is called the “Inquiry” period. It’s exactly that – a time to ask questions and discern whether God is calling you to the Catholic Church. There’s no obligation or pressure.
Can my spouse or friend go through OCIA with me?
Yes! We encourage companions – whether a spouse, family member, or friend. It’s a journey best made with support.
What next? Who should I contact?
Contact Vera Howard, the OCIA and Adult Faith Formation Coordinator in the parish office.
